Wedding
Gown Restoration: Is It Right For You?
With a
wedding gown restoration you can wear a family heirloom on your big
day.
|
Brides frequently
misunderstand the difference between what is meant by the terms "Wedding Gown
Preservation" and "Wedding Gown Restoration". A properly done wedding gown
preservation will prevent your gown from yellowing and deteriorating over time.
A wedding gown restoration is what is needed if the gown was not properly
preserved after the wedding.
Do you long to wear that old wedding gown
from years gone bye? Is the wedding gown of your dreams the family bridal gown
that time has yellowed and stained? Perhaps your mother or your grandmother
wore the gown and you would like to wear it for your special day, but people
have told you that it's beyond help because it's too badly stained or
discolored.
Fear not. You may still be able to use that family heirloom.
There are people who specialize in wedding gown restoration. They are capable
of restoring antique or vintage bridal gowns to their original color without
damage to delicate fabrics or dyes. They can remove stains and discoloration
that dry cleaners cannot.
Wedding gown restoration is both an art and a
science practiced by a relatively few specialized companies. Most are
especially experienced dry cleaners who have been quietly engaged in this craft
for years. A professional dry cleaner, skilled in the restoration and treatment
of wedding gowns can breathe restore these heirloom treasures. Choose your
cleaner carefully; not all are wedding gown restoration
specialists.

Before you
make a final decision, have your specialists look over your gown. He or she
will check for tears and examine the areas which came in contact with skin for
stains and grime. He will inspect the skirt and/or train for stains and decide
whether or not the gown can be perfectly restored. Don't worry about yellowing.
If the fabric is still good, a restoration specialist can achieve amazing
results.
Wedding gown restoration is a very special technique that is
not usually available at your local dry cleaner. The technique for restoring
any particular gown varies from gown to gown, based upon specific issues that
are different from gown to gown. The age, the material, the amount of
yellowing, age-enhanced stains, weakened fabric, damaged or discolored trims,
etc1., all have to be evaluated and considered in order to determine the
appropriate method for restoring the gown.
Restoration usually utilizes
a wetc1leaning process. It is important to understand that wetc1leaning is not
the same as washing. The only similarity is that both use water. Wetc1leaning is
a very gentle and skillful technique of immersing a gown in a bath specially
formulated for wedding gown restoration, based upon the fabric, trim and stains
of the gown. Stains are removed slowly over time by an intensive series of
steps, all by hand and one at a time. Color is gradually restored and stains
removed by the gentle and slow process.
A wedding gown restoration
cannot be rushed. It took years for the gown to deteriorate to the point at
which it needs to be restored. While the wedding gown restoration specialist
can perform miracles, don't expect them to occur overnight. If you have chosen
to have a wedding gown restoration, give the specialist ample time to perform
the magic. Start at least a year in advance of your wedding. That way, if, for
some reason your gown cannot be successfully restored, and not all of them can,
you will still have time to find a suitable gown.
Wedding gown
restoration is, indeed, a slow process. You should be prepared to pay several
hundred dollars for the specialist's time and knowledge.
